Carlo Vega

I met Carlo when he was freelancing as an animator , but quickly learned his passion was the kind of art that belongs in galleries and installations… he had so much more to offer than my tiny logo projects! I believe his artistic statement from his website says quite a bit about him and how thoughtful he is in his expression.

I was born in Lima, Peru and grew up during a time of domestic terrorism and political turmoil. It was during this time in my life that the cognitive foundations of what would become my artistic explorations were set. From my mathematician grandfather, I learned of geometry and the perfection in logic, and from my Catholic surroundings, I absorbed the potent iconography and sense of spiritual mystery. Upon leaving Peru at the height of terrorism, I moved with my family first to Montreal then to South Carolina, each place bringing me culturally and geographically farther away from my home.

In approaching my art as a studied collection of thoughts and experiences, I am able to piece together my various realities. By creating, I am embarking on a path of self-exploration that reconnects me to lost moments, lost people and lost places. In this process of active reflection, I invent, and my work oscillates between what has been and will be. By combining simple, often geometric shapes with nebulous backgrounds and exploring abstract concepts through various mediums, I explore a tension between the logical and the inexplicable, the same tension I was surrounded with as a child in Lima. I received his BA from the University of South Carolina in 2000 and currently reside in Brooklyn, New York.
